One of the first people Norman Bodek, founder of the Productivity Group, met in Japan in 1981 was Shigeo Shingo, the great Japanese engineer who assisted Toyota in implementing Just in Time Manufacturing Shingo developed the SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) technique and was convinced that any changeover could be accomplished in less than ten minutes (he was involved in reducing press changeovers at Toyota to 3 minutes). |
Click here to read our article on SMED | | Dr Shingo taught Productivity his approach and we have been using this successfully for twenty years, helping companies reduce changoever times by never less than 50% and often up to 90%. SMED can be applied to any process, not just presses and our experience ranges from Surface Mount Technology to injection moulding to spirit bottling lines. |
